- One of the oldest terraces in the city -
History of Brasserie De Post
We, the people of Antwerp, are true bon vivants. The many lively terraces are proof of that. And know that you are sitting at one of the oldest spots in Antwerp. More than 400 years ago, this building stood on a grass-covered cemetery, popularly known as “’t Groenkerkhof” (the Green
Cemetery).
In 1784, the cemetery was moved to Stuyvenberg and Kiel, and the square was first renamed “Place de l’Égalité” and later “Place Bonaparte.” Although it was always a meeting place for notable figures, the atmosphere remained lively and welcoming. With the daily flower market, the square was bustling with activity, and when the city planted many elm trees in 1873, it became known once again as ’t Groenkerkhof or “Place Verte.”
In 1907, it became a charming boutique run by Emma Vos. In 1910, she transformed her shop into a thriving hospitality business called “Le Repos des Congolais.” This hotel was especially popular with businessmen traveling between Belgium and its former colony.
After the war, a brasserie was established here, attracting mainly high society. And when the metro was completed in the 1970s, the sun-drenched terrace was added.
Over the years, many prominent figures from sports and show business have found their way here. To this day, Brasserie De Post remains the place to be in the city.
